Vegetables May Lower Risk Of Breast Cancer

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

A new study says eating a lot of vegetables, fruits and soy may reduce your chances of getting breast cancer by up to 30 percent.

The University of Colorado studied 34,000 Chinese women. Those who ate more vegetables, fruits and soy had decreased risks of developing breast cancer. Doctors say that these findings should be similar in North American women too.

The study split eating habits into two groups: meat-starch-saturated-fat and vegetable-fruit-soy. Of the 34,028 women studied between 45 and 74 years old, 629 developed breast cancer over 10 years. They found that the more vegetables, fruit and soy the woman ate, the lower her risk of breast cancer became. They didn’t find that eating more meat caused cancer.

The doctors interview by Canada.com didn’t suggest that women become vegetarians. Instead, they say women should just eat their vegetables. They recommend having a diverse diet. Try to eat as much vegetables, fruit and soy as possible.

The Hot New Beverage for 2010 - Coconut Water

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

vitacocoAccording to the experts, the hottest new health beverage for 2010 is coconut water.

Believe it or not, more and more Americans (and celebrities like Madonna) are ditching their diets sodas and energy drinks for the low calorie, fat free and natural taste of coconut water. The two hottest brands of coconut water are Vita Coco and Zico.

Why the buzz now? Coconut Water has long been a popular treat in South America and the Caribbean, but like anything else, once marketed and packaged properly, it can easily become the hottest new drink on the market. That’s exactly what’s happened in America.

Low in calories, low in sodium, fat free and with no added sugar or cholesterol, Coconut Water is the new drink of choice. It has 14 times more electrolytes than the average sports drink and more potassium than two bananas. It will hydrate you naturally with no artificial add-ons. Among its many uses, its said to cleanse the digestive tract, to naturally replenish the body’s fluids after exercise, detoxify and fight viruses, and help improve circulation. Sounds great to us!

If you’re interested, you can pick up coconut water at your local high-end grocery store (i.e. Whole Foods) and select food markets. It retails for about $2 a bottle. You can also check out Sunday’s news piece on coconut water from Good Morning America here.

Stay Healthy With A Salt Room

Friday, February 19th, 2010

There are a lot of different alternative therapies out there to keep you fit and healthy. Now you can add salt to your list of things to try.

New York’s first salt therapy center, also known as Halotherapy, has opened up and is welcoming clients. The New York Times says the salt is supposed to be “anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.”

At Halo Air/Salt Rooms clients are invited to sit in one of the five salt encrusted rooms and breath in the clean, salty air. The floor and walls of the small room are covered in salt which they import from the Ukraine. Salty air is pumped into the rooms. It is the breathing in of the tiny particles of salt that is said to be good for you. You can meditate in the salty room for one hour sessions.

In Europe the treatment is popular with people who have asthma, allergies or any breathing conditions. It hasn’t been clinically tested yet in the US, so it isn’t known if there are actually benefits to sitting in a salt room or not. It’s $99 an hour if you want to find out for yourself what it’s like.

Beer Is Good For Your Bones

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

A new study has found that beer is a good source of silicon and may help prevent osteoporosis.

It is a little known fact that silicon is important to keep bones and connective tissue healthy and strong. A study done at the University of California revealed that beer is a good source of silicon and therefore is good for your bones.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the study found that pale ales contain the highest content of silicon because they undergo less heat in the brewing process than darker beers. Beer made from barley have high silicon content as well. India pale ales overall seemed to be the best beers to keep your bones healthy. Light and non-alcoholic beers have the lowest silicon content.

While beer may be good for your bones, doctors are not suggesting that you go out and buy a six pack every night. The story says doctors have not studied the overall health effects of beer.

You can also eat oat bran, granola and dates to add silicon in your diet.

Health Tips for the Holidays

Friday, December 18th, 2009

The holidays are the most stressful time of the year for many.  More heart problems and hospitalizations occur during the holidays than any other time of year.  Dr. Oz recently revealed to ABC News his tips for preventing a heart attack this holiday season.

1. Limit drinking: Never have two drinks in a row.  Alcohol is toxic to the heart.  “Have one drink of alcohol, then a glass of water,” Oz advises.

2. Avoid high-fat foods: Never have food in both hands at the same time.  Studies show a high-fat meal can lead to dysfunction in artery lining for six to 12 hours after eating, Oz says, adding that “you spend your entire holiday season having fatty food.”

3. Know how your feelings affect your heart.  ”Part of the reason we need the comfort food is because we’re stressed,” Oz says.  “Your family is hardwired to get on your nerves.”

4. Stay 6 to 8 feet from a burning fireplace.  Fine particulates from fireplace smoke can lodge in your lungs and trigger a clot and a heart attack, Oz says.

5. Know the Symptoms of a Heart Attack.  “If you think you’re having symptoms of a heart attack … call 911 and get a chewable aspirin,” Oz says.

IS THE COOKIE DIET RIGHT FOR YOU?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

There has been a lot of talk this year about Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet and its now on its way to Canada.  Dr. Siegal (also known as the Cookie Doctor) created his famous hunger-controlling meal replacement cookies more than 30 years ago.  His cookies claim to satisfy hunger without drugs and help you stick to a reduced-calorie diet.

In the past year, CanadaBeauty has seen him on a variety of television shows discussing his diet.  What also caused a lot of buzz for Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet were young celebrity endorsers Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson.

In world obsessed with quick fixes, it’s no surprise that the Cookie Diet is successful, but is it safe?  Critics say that it will work, but only because it promotes a diet of approx 1,000 calories per day.  Most diets recommend a calorie intake of at least a 1,200 per day and anything under is considered by many dieticians to be unsafe.  Keri Gans, a registered NYC dietician told the New York Times, “the bottom line is that you can’t meet your nutritional needs in six cookies and one meal a day.  It’s not possible.”

Even though it has its critics, the Cookie Diet is only growing in popularity.  If you’re interested, check out the Dr. Siegal website for more info.  A week’s supply of cookies will cost about $59.00.

ROLLER DERBY MAKES A COMEBACK

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Need to shake up your exercise routine?  Believe it or not, women’s roller derby is back in a big way.  Leagues are popping up across Canada and the USA and popularity is sure to grow even bigger thanks to indie film “Whip It” starring Ellen Paige and directed by Drew Barrymore.

Apparently roller derby is a great workout.  So far, there are over 78 leagues in North America and the number is growing.  Women need to be 21 to join and like any sport, attend weekly practices and play opposing teams regularly.  Today’s roller derby women race on flat tracks (unlike the 1970’s sloped tracks) and are not professional.  It’s a tough, physically challenging contact sport, but for many women, it’s a great bonding exercise and one where the workout is intense.  It’s also said to be a great stress reliever and for anyone who’s ever seen a game, it’s a highly aggressive sport.

Could you do roller derby?  It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure!

HOTTEST FITNESS GADGET - FITBIT!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Fitbit has been in high demand since it showcased at TechCrunch50 Expo last year.  Now its finally ready to hit store shelves and we’re planning on being the first in line for this new fitness must-have!

fitbit85.JPGWhat is Fitbit?  It’s a small, technologically advanced device that clips to your clothing and tracks steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned and quality of sleep throughout the day and night.  The Fitbit tracks your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities.

The Fitbit screen will provide info instantly and because Fitbit is wireless, you can activate it so that all data gets automatically synchronized to your computer and then the web through a wireless base station.  Fitbit will monitor your daily progress and allow you to see how active you are on a daily basis.  It also allows you to easily see improvements in your overall health, fitness and activity levels.  You can even plug in your daily diet so that calories consumed are noted.

For someone wanting to keep a close eye on their health, fitness and overall lifestyle, Fitbit is said to be ideal and for approx $99 it might be worth it for many of us.  We’ll provide a review once we’ve got one of our own!
