Lindsay Lohan Sues E-Trade

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

lindsay-lohan-2Our favourite train wreck, Lindsay Lohan is suing E-Trade for $100 million.

According to US Weekly, the lawsuit is over the use of the name “Lindsay” in the recent E-Trade tv commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. In the ad, the E-Trade baby apologizes to his girlfriend for not calling her the night before. ”And that milkaholic Lindsay wasn’t over?” the baby girl asks before another baby girl pops into the screen saying, “Milk-a-whaaat?”

For Lindsay this is a perfect way to cash in and her legal team is making every effort to speak out on their position. ”Many celebrities are known by one name only, and E-Trade is using that knowledge to profit,” Lohan’s lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, said in a statement to the New York Post. “They’re using her name as a parody of her life. Why didn’t they use the name Susan? This is a subliminal message. Everybody’s talking about it and saying it’s Lindsay Lohan.”

Canadian Women Rule The Olympic Podium

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

olympic-flameIf you want to talk about girl power then look no further than the Canadian Olympic team. As this is written Canada has 16 medals at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Twelves of those medals have been won by women.

This isn’t the first time Canadian women have took it up a notch. In the 1988 Olympics, women brought home three quarters of our medals.

Some say that these statistics prove that women should be getting more funding from the Canadian Olympic Committee. Only 40% of the Canadian Olympic team is female, but they have 80% of the medals.

Canadian medal winning speed skater, Clara Hughes told The Globe And Mail there are usually more men competing in any given event so it is harder to qualify. For example, there weren’t even enough female ski jumpers to make it to the Olympic games in Vancouver. She doesn’t think the women get off easy, but in men’s sports the top 10 is harder to crack.

Chris Rudge of the Canadian Olympic Committee said that women might be handling the stress of the games better.

Canada Breaks Olympic Gold Medal Record

Friday, February 26th, 2010

olympic-flameWhen the Canadian women’s hockey team shut out the Americans to take gold last night, our athletes set a new record.

With 8 gold medals, this is a Canadian best. Our previous record for gold medals at a Winter Olympics was seven from Salt Lake City in 2002. We repeated that record in Turin in 2006. Now on home soil, we have a new gold medal record at the Winter Olympics.

Canada doesn’t have the most overall medals at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. With a total medal count of 17 (8 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze), we are in fourth place. Canada trails the United States, Germany and Norway. We might not be able to beat the United States’ 32 medals, but we are in a three-way tie for the most gold. The United States and Germany also have 8 gold.

We will set a record for the most gold-medals by a hosting country if we win just two more according to Canwest News. We are looking at you Canadian curlers.

There is a lot of action left in these final few days of the Olympics with more chances for Canada to be on the podium. Regardless, the country is already so proud of all of our athletes for how well they are doing.

Movie Review - Shutter Island

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Shutter IslandBefore getting into the review of Shutter Island I want to mention two things.  First off, whenever a movie’s release date is pushed back my expectations for how good it is going to be are lowered.  Shutter Island was supposed to have been released last October, but due to financial reasons the studio changed the date to this weekend.  Secondly, I had a bad feeling that the preview had shown me more than it should have, and going into this movie I thought I had a pretty good idea that there would be a twist involved, and that I knew what this twist was.  It is a bit of a pet peeve of mine whenever this happens, but I also enjoy seeing if I am right.  Now onto the review.

Shutter Island is Martin Scorsese (Goodfellows, Taxi Driver) and Leonardo DiCaprio’s (Titantic, Blood Diamond) fourth collaboration, and it’s based on the novel by Dennis Lahane (Mystic River).  The movie opens in 1954 with two U.S. Marshall’s heading to Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane, where one of their prisoners has mysteriously disappeared from her locked room.  Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) is one of these Marshalls, and he will stop at nothing to solve the case.  As he continues his investigation he discovers that the hospital doctors may be involved in radical and unethical treatments, and he hopes to blow the lid off the entire thing before he leaves the island and returns to the mainland.

Leonardo DiCaprio continues to impress me.  I was never a fan of his until The Departed, but now it seems like everything he is in I find myself enjoying.  He is joined by an incredible supporting cast in this movie as well, which include Mark Ruffalo(Zodiac, Blindness)  as his partner, and Ben Kingsley (Ganhdi, House of Sand and Fog) as the primary doctor of Shutter Island.  The story does a great job of holding your attention, but I doubt I would have enjoyed it as much as I did without these actors pulling the characters’ strings.

I found myself enjoying this movie, and I would recommend it.  Even though I did have my theory going in as to what was going to happen, it still kept my attention as I looked for clues that would prove my theory correct.  The story moves at a nice pace, the strong musical score adds to the suspense, and Martin Scorsese’s direction is once again at the high level you would expect.  If you are looking for a great mystery/thriller go see Shutter Island, just avoid watching the preview too closely before you head to the theatre.

Tiger Woods Apologizes At Press Conference

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Tiger WoodsTiger Woods apologized to everyone today in a television press conference at Sawgrass golf course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Woods started the press conference by apologizing public to his wife Elin Nordegren. Woods said, “Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior… My real apology will not come in the form of words, but my behavior over time. We have a lot to discuss. What we say to each other will remain between the two of us.”

Tiger Woods also apologized to his friends, extended family, sponsors and fans for his behaviour. He admitted he didn’t think about how his actions would effect those around him.

Tiger said, “The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior… I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable – and I am the only person to blame. I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in. I knew my actions were wrong, but I convinced myself that normal rules didn’t apply. Instead, I thought only about myself. I ran straight through the boundaries a married couple should live by. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me.”

Tiger’s wife, Elin Nordegren, wasn’t at the press conference. While some may take it as a bad sign that she wasn’t there to stand by her man, Elin may have wanted to avoid the press fiasco. Tiger Woods’ mother,Kultida, sat in the front row according to People Magazine.

Tiger Woods remained composed while he read his statement leading some to feel that it wasn’t really from the heart. Critics have mixed feelings on whether the statement was a step in the right direction or too little to late from the golfer. What do you think? Is Tiger sincere?

Angelina Jolie – Facial Problems?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Over the past two months, Angelina Jolie has been spotted with unflattering, protruding muscles where her jaw meets her neck. It’s caused a lot of buzz in the online community. Celebrity magazine, US Weekly decided to consult with a few beauty experts to see if the source of her protruding muscles could be determined. Two of them confirmed that Angelina must have had some sort of procedure that caused the muscle reaction.

Dr. Elie Levine, who has not treated Jolie, says that it appears she’s “received Botox to her face and likely her neck” because she shows “no wrinkles along the sides of her eyes (the crow’s feet) despite that very large smile… and her forehead is smooth.”

Dr. Brian Glatt concurs. “Angelina appears to have had a procedure done to tighten her lower face, neck, and jaw line such as a mini or lower facelift,” he says.

Take a look at the photos here. What do you think? Has Angelina gone under the knife or are the protrusions natural?

Jon Gosselin & TLC Settle Their Differences

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Jon Gosselin settled his lawsuit with TLC yesterday out of court. Both parties were suing each other, but the pair came to an agreement. The terms are not being released.

Back in October, TLC sued Jon Gosselin for breach of contract when he made public appearances everywhere that would take him. TLC felt it violated their contract and looked bad according to People Magazine. Meanwhile Jon Gosselin counter-sued the television network for damaging his reputation.

Both suits have now been dropped. RadarOnline reports that Jon Gosselin couldn’t afford the expensive lawyer fees it would cost him to go through trial.

They also say that Jon has agreed to let TLC resume filming his children. Does this mean a return of Jon & Kate Plus 8? We will have to see. TLC previously talked about filming Kate Plus 8, so this show could be back on. This could be the return of daily news about the Gosselin’s since they have dropped off the radar recently. Let’s hope not.
